Dangerous Median at Golibar Maidan Replaced to Improve Traffic Safety

07 Jan 2025

The broken and unpainted median at Golibar Maidan on Shankarsheth Road, long blamed for numerous accidents, was finally demolished on Monday. The Public Works Department (PWD) began constructing a new median to improve lane discipline and prevent further mishaps on this busy stretch used by heavy vehicles around the clock. In February 2023, orange bollards were temporarily installed after multiple complaints, but they deteriorated over time. The damaged median, with metal protrusions posing constant risks, led to frequent traffic congestion and accidents, especially at night. The PWD expects the new median to be ready by Monday night, ensuring smoother vehicular movement.

The PWD has proposed transferring this 5km stretch on the Pune-Solapur highway to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) for better maintenance, citing delays in timely repairs. While this section falls under Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) jurisdiction, the PWD handles its maintenance, which has been challenging due to financial constraints. PCB officials stated that the narrow lanes and lack of space make road widening unfeasible, worsening congestion on the already busy road. Pune traffic police had flagged the deteriorated median to both PMC and PWD, prompting the current construction efforts.
