The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has temporarily halted building permissions for new projects within a 5 km radius of approximately 231 villages surrounding Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. This decision comes after both Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) expressed their inability to provide water to these regions due to ongoing water shortages. The PMRDA commissioner stated that the stay on permissions would remain until water allocation for these areas is clarified. He added that discussions would be held with Pune Zilla Parishad and Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran to explore possible solutions, and the issue may be escalated to the state government for further decisions.
Both PMC and PCMC have faced significant challenges in meeting water demands within their own jurisdictions, citing population growth and insufficient water supply from Bhama-Askhed and Khadakwasla dams. In recent letters, both civic bodies explained their limitations in extending water supply to areas outside their boundaries. While water schemes are being developed for five out of 23 newly merged villages, these projects are expected to take up to three years to complete, leaving the areas within the 5 km radius without a clear water supply solution in the immediate future.
