Pune Faces Challenges After Unexpected Removal of BRTS Route

27 Dec 2023

The Pune Municipal Corporation's sudden removal of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) route from Gunjan Chowk to Phoenix Mall on the Pune-Yerawada-Ahmednagar highway on December 7 has created significant safety challenges for pedestrians. With road dividers cut at multiple locations during the construction of the BRTS route, the absence of dividers now poses life-threatening risks to those crossing the thoroughfare. Despite the removal of the non-existent BRTS route, safety measures, including the reconstruction of dividers and addressing road disarray, are yet to be implemented, leading to traffic jams and accidents.

Residents from areas like Sopan Nagar and Aaple Ghar Society are highlighting the urgency of addressing punctures and potential hazards at critical points, including Shastri Nagar, Aga Khan Palace, Ramwadi Police Chowki, Novotel Hotel, and Phoenix Mall. Concerns have also been raised about vehicles travelling in the wrong direction, emphasising the need for speed-breakers and safe pedestrian pathways. The Municipal Corporation, in response, claims to have started constructing dividers in some locations and is working on developing safe pedestrian pathways while placing temporary plastic dividers for immediate safety. Despite these efforts, concerns persist regarding the overall planning and safety enforcement on the affected route.
