Pune Metro Extension to Nigdi Receives Final Approval, Construction to Begin in February

05 Nov 2023

The extension of the metro route from the PCMC office towards Nigdi is poised to move forward with minimal delays, as it will not entail significant land acquisitions, except for the allocation of space for the entry-exit points of three stations. This project, with a budget exceeding Rs 900 crore, has recently secured the final approval from the Union government, paving the way for actual construction work to commence around February. The planned extension covers a 4.4-kilometer route along the median of the existing old Pune-Mumbai highway, with stations strategically positioned at Chinchwad, Akurdi, and Nigdi near Bhakti Shakti chowk. Anticipated to be completed over a span of approximately three years, this extension is set to provide a significant transportation boost for industrial workers in the Chinchwad and Akurdi regions, as well as students commuting to educational institutions in Nigdi and Akurdi.

While the extension brings promise, some regular commuters express their desire for the metro's reach to Nigdi to have been included in the initial phase. Nevertheless, this development signifies a crucial step forward in enhancing the region's public transportation network and facilitating easier access for both the workforce and students in these areas, reflecting an ongoing commitment to improving urban mobility in Pune.
