Citizens and activists staged a two-hour protest at Jai Hind Chowk in Ghorpadi on Friday, voicing their frustration over the poor condition of roads within the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) limits. They highlighted that roads, including those in army residential areas, were riddled with potholes, and despite repeated complaints, the cantonment authorities had taken minimal action. Protesters criticised the PCB's practice of filling potholes with murum, which is ineffective during the monsoon, leading to severe traffic congestion in Ghorpadi.
The 1.5km stretch from Ghorpadi Circle to the railway line was particularly problematic, with rainwater accumulating in large potholes due to inadequate drainage. Activists and residents expressed their anger over the cantonment's "laid-back attitude," with some noting that only roads used by senior army officers were well-maintained. A trader from Ghorpadi called for better coordination among agencies to ensure road safety and comfort for all citizens. Despite efforts to reach out, the PCB chief executive officer did not respond, though a senior official from the engineering department mentioned that road repairs would commence soon, acknowledging the limitations of previous repairs using murum material.
