Chandni Chowk Flyover Fails to Resolve Key Traffic and Safety Issues

11 Jan 2025

Sixteen months after the revamped Chandni Chowk flyover was opened, commuters continue to face several challenges despite its Rs 800-crore investment aimed at resolving congestion and accessibility issues. Persistent problems include buses stopping on the Satara highway, a lack of designated auto and taxi stands, and pedestrians crossing roads dangerously. Additionally, makeshift stops near the underpass at night create further chaos. While the flyover's ramps and underpasses were meant to streamline traffic, commuters have raised concerns over sharp turns, inadequate signage, and rampant speeding. Motorists unfamiliar with the area often struggle with the complex ramp system, while pedestrians face difficulties crossing the busy six-lane highway.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stated that improvement efforts are underway, including the construction of a pedestrian bridge and the installation of directional boards to guide motorists. Traffic congestion has reportedly reduced since the flyover’s inauguration in August 2023, but local activists and residents have demanded more comprehensive solutions to address commuter safety and accessibility. The Union Transport Minister was presented with a 16-point memorandum to highlight the unresolved issues, and authorities assured continued collaboration with traffic police to manage illegal bus halts and improve overall usability of the junction.
