The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has issued notices to owners of over 1,000 illegal structures in Chikhali’s Kudalwadi, instructing them to remove the constructions within two weeks or face demolition. This marks the first time the civic body has taken action against illegal structures in Kudalwadi's scrap market, which is notorious for frequent fire incidents due to inadequate safety measures. The latest fire on January 1 gutted three unauthorized scrap shops and godowns. Civic officials revealed that previous demolition drives were conducted as per the development plan (DP), but notices targeting the core areas of the scrap market are a new development.
In December 2023, PCMC removed 150 illegal constructions, including RCC and brick structures, during an anti-encroachment drive to facilitate road development in the Kudalwadi area. Civic officials noted that despite the absence of permissions, the scrap market employs around 60,000 to 70,000 people, which previously deferred action. Meanwhile, local BJP MLA alleged that Kudalwadi harbors illegal Bangladeshi and Rohingya nationals, a claim denied by the Pimpri Chinchwad Police. The civic body aims to address safety concerns while balancing the livelihood challenges of those affected.
