The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has taken stern action against illegal dumping along riverbanks, seizing nine vehicles and imposing fines totaling Rs 1.15 lakh on their owners. Special squads were deployed following citizen complaints, focusing on monitoring and preventing such activities along the Indrayani, Mula, and Pawana rivers. The PCMC's environment department, acting on numerous reports, caught offenders red-handed as they dumped construction materials, originating from a ready-mix concrete plant, onto the riverbanks. This crackdown comes in response to a series of similar incidents, with fines also imposed on violators in previous instances.
Despite the enforcement efforts, instances of illegal dumping persist, prompting civic officials to reassure continued vigilance and action against offenders. Earlier incidents along the Mula river in Wakad and Pimple Nilakh, as well as near Morya Park in Pimple Gurav along the Pawana riverbank, resulted in the seizure of vehicles and substantial fines imposed on violators. The PCMC emphasises the importance of citizen involvement, urging residents to report any illegal dumping activities they witness. These actions align with directives from the National Green Tribunal (NGT), underscoring the civic body's commitment to ensuring the preservation and cleanliness of the region's river ecosystems.
