The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) is set to present a proposal to the state government for the expansion of the Pune-Mumbai Expressway from six to eight lanes. The plan entails extending one lane on each side of the current expressway to alleviate the mounting traffic congestion. The estimated cost of the project, including construction and land acquisition, stands at around Rs5,000 crore. This encompasses the development of eight new tunnels, with two tunnels slated for construction on each side of Madap, Bhatan, and Kamshet. The current expressway handles a daily traffic volume ranging from 60,000 to 70,000 vehicles, with weekend traffic surging to approximately 90,000 vehicles. Given the consistent yearly traffic growth rate of 5%, this expansion initiative, proposed 21 years after the expressway's original completion, aims to enhance connectivity and travel convenience. Public sentiment appears to favour the expansion, with commuters and businesspeople optimistic about the potential positive impact on traffic conditions and travel efficiency. The approval of the proposal rests with the state government, and if granted, the project will be carried out in two phases, initially focusing on road widening, with tunnel construction slated for the subsequent phase.
