Encroached and Unsafe Footpaths Raise Concerns for Pedestrians in Pune

10 Dec 2024

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) observes ‘Pedestrians’ Day’ annually on December 11, but the city’s pedestrian infrastructure remains inadequate. Of Pune’s 2,000-kilometer road network, only 800 kilometers have footpaths, and many of these are encroached upon or unsafe for walking. According to the Indian Road Congress (IRC), footpaths should be reserved solely for pedestrians, yet the PMC’s recent ‘Walking Survey’ revealed 863 encroachments along 457.27 kilometers of road. Efforts are ongoing to address these issues, with PMC’s traffic planners emphasizing the need for safer, obstruction-free footpaths.

The PMC’s traffic planner highlighted that 1,200 kilometers of Pune’s roads, with widths of 15 meters or more, are eligible for footpath construction. However, despite existing footpaths on 800 kilometers of roads, encroachments and structural obstacles hinder free movement. The civic body is working to remove these barriers to improve pedestrian safety and ensure a better walking experience across the city.
