PMC to Implement Scientific Sanitary Waste Disposal at New Plant Starting August 1st

17 Jul 2023

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has announced the establishment of a dedicated plant for the proper disposal of diapers and sanitary pads. The plant aims to ensure the scientific disposal of these items while also recycling the remaining processed material. The project, funded by a corporate firm, is set to commence operations on August 1. The initiative has been inspired by a similar plant in Italy and is expected to process approximately 4.5 metric tonnes of diapers and sanitary pads.

Previously, such waste was disposed of along with dry garbage, but the new plant will provide a more efficient and environmentally friendly solution. Incinerator machines were previously installed by the civic administration, but they had limited capacity and proved to be ineffective. PMC officials estimate that around 300kg of cellulose can be produced from every tonne of waste. As part of the initiative, citizens will be encouraged to pack this waste separately, promoting segregation at the source. The PMC aims to promote this initiative extensively to garner public support and raise awareness about the importance of waste segregation for proper disposal and recycling.
