₹12,000 Crore Highway Project to Ease Pune Traffic and Connect to Mumbai

24 Mar 2025

The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed a new 135-kilometre four-lane highway connecting Shirur, Chakan, Talegaon, Shiroli, Karjat, and JNPT (Uran) to address traffic congestion in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Estimated at ₹12,000 crore, the project aims to provide an alternative route for vehicles traveling between Marathwada and Mumbai, easing pressure on the heavily used Shikrapur-Chakan-Talegaon-Lonavala corridor. This route, crucial for industrial traffic from Chakan and Shirur, frequently experiences bottlenecks that increase transportation costs and delays. The highway, planned under the Build, Operate, and Transfer (BOT) model, will include four lanes, eight village bypasses, and a tunnel at Khandala Ghat to ensure smooth traffic flow. Authorities expect it to reduce nearly 80% of congestion in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, significantly benefiting daily commuters and businesses. The proposal is currently under review by the State Environment Impact Assessment Committee and the State Infrastructure Committee, awaiting final approval from the state cabinet.

Once approved, the project will take one year for land acquisition and another two-and-a-half years for construction. The estimated cost includes ₹11,500 crore for land acquisition and ₹8,500 crore for road construction. Designed in two phases, the first phase will cover a 60-kilometre high-traffic section, while the second phase will complete the remaining 75 kilometres, ensuring full connectivity to JNPT. Beyond decongesting city roads, the highway is expected to boost economic growth by improving transport links for industries in Shirur, Talegaon, and Karjat, while also enhancing agricultural trade. The planned integration with Panvel and Uran will further strengthen connectivity to JNPT, a key trade and logistics hub. Authorities believe that once operational, this highway will be a game-changer for transportation, benefiting commuters, businesses, and industries while significantly improving urban traffic flow in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
