Citizens Demand Consistency in Waste Management Amid Growing Garbage Concerns in Pune

24 Aug 2024

Amid growing concerns over the accumulation of garbage in residential areas and vacant plots across Pune, the civic administration has called for public feedback on waste management as part of its Swachh Survekshan initiative. Despite the daily deployment of over 700 vehicles for garbage collection, citizens have raised concerns about inconsistencies in the system, particularly in merged areas like Phursungi, where irregularities in waste collection have led to the creation of new dumping spots. Residents argue that without consistent action and a robust system for daily waste collection, especially on weekends, the situation will continue to deteriorate.

Citizen forums have acknowledged improvements in door-to-door waste collection but have criticised the inadequate handling of waste in public spaces. New illegal dumping sites continue to emerge, particularly along the river, exacerbating the city's waste management woes. Residents have called for stricter enforcement, including imposing hefty fines, to curb open dumping and ensure that waste collection efforts are maintained consistently. The civic administration has identified and eliminated 50% of the 700 chronic garbage spots in the city but admits that much work remains to be done to improve trash handling and cleanliness across Pune.
