PMC plans to auction properties of tax defaulters on February 5 to recover dues of Rs16 crore.
The administration has identified 200 properties for recovery, with 32 scheduled for auction on February 5.
Despite notices and warnings, defaulting property owners have not paid taxes, leading to the decision to auction their properties.
The online auction aims to collect around Rs200 crore, and any surplus from property sales will be returned to the owners, who must apply within six months; unclaimed funds will be deposited in PMC's accounts.
PMC has added its name to property cards and documents before the auction, and some property owners have not paid taxes for up to 10 years.
The auction is conducted under the Maharashtra Regional and Town Planning Act, empowering local self-governing bodies for tax recovery auctions.
Approval from authorities like courts has been obtained before starting the auction, as per the civic official.
PMC data indicates that approximately 12 lakh properties, including mobile towers, and dues from large defaulters like industries, commercial complexes, IT parks, and hospitals, are liable to pay taxes.
