Motorists in Pune are facing bumpy rides and traffic congestion due to ongoing road excavation works for pre-monsoon preparations, such as laying water pipelines and stormwater drains, according to Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) officials. However, members of the Sajag Nagrik Manch, a citizens' group, criticised the lack of coordination between the agencies responsible for digging and restoring roads, stating that the initiative of 'one road, one unit' has not been effectively implemented. This disorganisation has led to inefficiencies and a waste of public funds, as noted by Vivek Velankar of the citizens' group.
Despite PMC's efforts to set deadlines for completing road works ahead of the rainy season, there have been challenges in maintaining a consistent pace of progress. Civic activists expressed concerns about the administration's failure to ensure timely completion of works in previous years. While there has been a reduction in the number of applications for laying cables this year compared to previous years, PMC officials clarified that significant stretches of roads have been approved for excavation, funded by both civic resources and allocations from MLAs.
