Repairs Scheduled for Five Bridges Over Mula and Mutha Rivers

21 Mar 2024

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated repair and strengthening works on several key bridges spanning the Mula and Mutha rivers, following the recent completion of similar projects on the Yashawantrao Chavan bridge. Over the next two months, the Sangam bridge, Mhatre bridge, SM Joshi bridge, Rajaram bridge, and another bridge in Sangamwadi will undergo repairs, including the replacement of expansion joints, bearings, and grouting. PMC officials aim to minimise disruptions to traffic by exploring options to carry out the repairs without necessitating route diversions, considering the significant vehicular traffic these bridges accommodate.

While the Chavan bridge repairs did not significantly affect traffic due to its primary use by two-wheelers, upcoming repairs will involve larger bridges utilised by all vehicle types. PMC officials assure that efforts will be made to avoid complete closures, focusing mainly on repairing the lower parts of the spans. The administration targets completion of these repairs before the onset of the monsoon season, with additional bridges scheduled for repairs in subsequent phases. Despite emphasising the safety of all bridge structures, PMC acknowledges the necessity of repairs to ensure smoother travel experiences, as recommended by previous bridge audits. However, regular commuters stress the importance of addressing issues like waste dumping and illegal parking to improve overall bridge conditions.
