IMD Warns Dry Conditions Challenge 125 Districts

19 Apr 2024

According to the latest data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Pune, approximately 125 districts across 23 states and Union Territories are grappling with increasingly dry conditions and drought. This marks a significant surge from the beginning of March this year, when only 98 districts were affected. Among the worst-affected states are Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Uttarakhand, and Tamil Nadu, where various districts are experiencing dry to extremely dry conditions.

The Standardised Precipitation Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) values from March 14 to April 10, 2024, highlight the severity of the situation, with districts such as Surat, Rajkot, Morbi, Junagarh, Jamnagar, and Devbhoomi Dwarka in Gujarat; Kurukshetra and Kaithal in Haryana; Wayanad, Thrissur, Pattanamittia, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kollam, Idukki, Ernakulam, and Alappuzha in Kerala; and Solapur, Satara, Sangli, Pune, Nashik, and Kolhapur in Maharashtra facing water stress. Experts caution that if the dry spell persists or worsens, it could have severe implications for agriculture, water resources, and rural livelihoods in these regions, underscoring the urgent need for mitigation measures.
