PMC rushes to shift Kothrud waste ramp to make way for Pune Metro expansion

30 Apr 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is facing a major logistical hurdle after being directed to shut down the garbage segregation ramp in Kothrud to make way for the Pune Metro’s Vanaz–Chandani Chowk extension. The land, originally used for a depot and temporary garbage segregation, is now being handed over entirely to the Pune Metro. While the PMC began developing a new waste centre on a 40-guntha plot in Bavdhan, construction is stalled as the site lies in the NDA airport funnel zone, requiring clearance from the defence ministry. Until approval is granted, the solid waste department is exploring diverting waste to already burdened centres at Aundh and Ghole Road, which will likely increase operational strain and transport costs.

The now-scrapped Kothrud ramp was handling about 185 tonnes of waste daily from Warje and Karve Nagar. This interim setup was established after the original garbage depot was moved to Uruli Devachi and Phursungi to accommodate an earlier Metro depot. With the latest land handover for the 1.12 km metro extension project, the solid waste department is left struggling to find a feasible solution to manage waste from one of Pune’s most densely populated areas. The Vanaz–Chandani Chowk Metro stretch, cleared by the state in March 2024, is awaiting central approval before bidding for station and pillar design can begin.
