PMC and Maha Metro Plan Double-Decker Flyover, Metro Expansions to Ease Pune Traffic

07 Feb 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha Metro) are considering the construction of an additional double-decker flyover in Kothrud, inspired by the success of the existing one at Nal Stop Chowk. This proposal is part of the Metro extension plan from Vanaz to Chandni Chowk, aimed at easing congestion along this stretch. In a recent meeting, officials from Maha Metro and PMC, along with the Union minister of state for cooperation and civil aviation, discussed various upcoming Metro projects, including routes from Kharadi to Pune Airport and Katraj to Hinjewadi. The Maha Metro managing director stated that feasibility studies for these routes are in progress as part of the comprehensive mobility plan (CMP), with public suggestions and objections to be invited soon.

The existing Nal Stop double-decker flyover, constructed between 2019 and 2022, has helped streamline traffic between Law College Road, Mhatre Bridge, and Karve Road. Officials believe a similar approach on the Vanaz-Chandni Chowk stretch will improve traffic flow. Additionally, the Katraj-Hinjewadi Metro corridor is expected to enhance public transport and create a circular transit system for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. Another major development under consideration is a multimodal transport hub in Kharadi, which would integrate multiple Metro routes with direct access to Pune Airport. While the PMC has yet to prepare a detailed project report (DPR) for the Kharadi-Pune Airport Metro extension, the proposed infrastructure projects collectively aim to enhance connectivity and ease urban traffic challenges.
