Residents Warn of Protest Over Recurring Fires at Uruli Devachi Garbage Depot

10 Apr 2025

Residents of Uruli Devachi and Phursungi have threatened to launch an agitation if the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fails to address recurring fires at the local garbage depot, with the latest incident reported on Tuesday evening and continuing until early Wednesday. Although the PMC has stopped dumping fresh waste at the site, the waste processing plant remains operational, and a bio-mining project is ongoing. Locals claim that trucks still bring waste daily, worsening air pollution and raising area temperatures. Residents expressed frustration over PMC’s inaction and warned they might block garbage trucks if the situation doesn’t improve. They demanded the deployment of a dedicated team to monitor and control fires.

Activists criticized the civic body for not laying water pipelines to tackle such emergencies, pointing out that over 50 water tankers had to be used to douse the most recent blaze. A resident blamed the authorities for not taking long-term preventive measures. Meanwhile, PMC officials said they were increasing vigilance at vulnerable spots and investigating the causes of the fires. The head of PMC’s solid waste management department attributed the increased incidents to rising temperatures and said measures were being taken to mitigate future risks.
