MPCB Sends Show Cause Notice to PCMC Over River Pollution

13 Feb 2024

The Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) has taken action against the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for reportedly releasing untreated water into the Indrayani, Mula, and Pawana rivers. Following a complaint received by the deputy chief minister about increased effluent discharge, the MPCB issued a show cause notice to the PCMC. The Indrayani River, particularly sacred to the Varkari community, has witnessed pollution, prompting concerns about environmental degradation. PCMC is said to release approximately 59 MLD of untreated domestic effluent into these rivers, highlighting the need for better sewage treatment facilities and environmental management measures.

Despite PCMC's claims of ongoing efforts to enhance sewage treatment infrastructure, the MPCB has emphasised the urgency of the situation and urged prompt action to address the pollution issue. With concerns rising over the impact on both the environment and local communities, the PCMC's response to the show cause notice is awaited, while efforts to improve sewage treatment plants and ensure the release of treated water into the rivers remain crucial in mitigating pollution and safeguarding the health of these water bodies.
