Pune Traffic Police Implement Signal-Free System on Nagar Road to Ease Congestion

16 Mar 2025

The Pune city traffic police have introduced a signal-free movement system on Nagar Road to ease congestion and reduce travel time between Parnakuti Chowk and Wagholi. As part of this initiative, traffic diversions were implemented at key junctions, including Shastri Nagar Chowk, where the right turn towards Kalyani Nagar was shut, requiring motorists to take a U-turn further ahead. Similarly, at Wadgaon Sheri junction, vehicles taking a right turn from Parnakuti Chowk were causing bottlenecks, so a U-turn was designated near Anibaj Gate, close to a Metro pillar. Other changes include shifting U-turn points at Somnath Nagar Chowk and Kharadi Dargah Chowk to improve traffic flow.

According to the deputy commissioner of police (traffic), these changes were made after analyzing vehicle counts and signal timings, leading to a reduction in travel time by nearly two minutes. The new system, introduced on an experimental basis, may become permanent after further refinements. However, the recent closure of the right turn towards Kalyani Nagar from Shastri Nagar has drawn objections from commuters, prompting discussions on whether additional modifications will be needed.
