Metro Expansion in Pimpri Chinchwad Set to Boost Connectivity

21 Mar 2025

Maha Metro is set to expand its services in Pimpri Chinchwad with the proposed 42km Nigdi-Mukai Chowk-Wakad-Nashik Phata-Chakan route. The detailed project report (DPR) for this corridor is expected to be completed by next month. This new route will enhance connectivity in key areas like Nigdi, Nashik Road, Bhosari, Moshi, Wakad Bypass, and Ravet, which have experienced rapid residential and commercial growth. Maha Metro began studying this alignment last year, and the project is now in its final phase. Once completed, the DPR will be submitted to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) for approvals before moving to the state and central governments for further processing. The study includes station locations, land requirements, and expected footfall, ensuring a comprehensive planning approach.

This will be the second Metro corridor in the Pimpri Chinchwad region, following the ongoing PCMC-Nigdi extension of the Swargate-PCMC route. Initially, a Metro-Neo project was proposed for the Nashik Phata-Chakan stretch, but PCMC later pushed for a full-scale Metro system due to the growing need for robust public transport. Residents have emphasized the urgency of improving connectivity, urging the authorities to link the new route with the Hinjawadi-Shivaji Nagar Metro stretch. Many have also called for a broader Metro expansion in Pimpri Chinchwad to match the extensive coverage seen in Pune city.
