Efforts to ease traffic congestion at Pune's University Chowk are in full swing, with the civic body aiming to complete the University Road widening and stormwater drain line shifting by the end of next month. A recent meeting gathered key stakeholders, including the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA), and traffic police, to assess ongoing progress and future plans. As the PMC reports that 80% of the land required for road widening has been acquired, discussions in the meeting revolved around expediting the remaining land acquisition and commencing construction of the SPPU chowk flyover by mid-October. This flyover is a pivotal component of the Hinjawadi-Shivaji Nagar Metro project, overseen by the PMRDA, and its completion is expected to greatly alleviate traffic woes at the congested junction.
During the meeting, traffic movement plans were discussed, including proposals to reroute traffic through the university campus and adjust traffic patterns on Baner Road and Aundh Road to facilitate flyover construction. Stakeholders have urged authorities to devise a comprehensive plan that minimizes commuter disruptions, as regular travelers already face traffic snarls and reduced carriageways due to ongoing roadworks. Commuters are hopeful that prioritizing this project will lead to a smoother traffic flow and reduced hardships at one of the city's busiest junctions, with the deputy chief minister emphasizing the need for coordinated efforts and prompt land acquisition during a recent review meeting on the issue.
