Govt Plans Housing for Families Affected by Demolitions

10 Mar 2025

The state government has issued an order directing municipal corporations, PMRDA, and municipal councils to take strict action against unauthorised constructions while ensuring that displaced families receive shelter under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Families affected by demolitions will be registered under PMAY, and if there is a delay in providing houses, they will be accommodated in rental housing within a permanent transitional camp for a fixed period. For economically weaker sections (EWS) and low-income groups (LIG), rental charges will be applied at market rates, and in case of limited rental flats, allocation will be done through a lottery system. The government has also indicated that after staying in rental housing for a specified period, affected families may have the opportunity to claim ownership of their allotted homes.

The urban development department has also instructed local authorities to take legal action against landowners, architects, and contractors involved in illegal constructions. However, while the directive ensures housing for displaced residents, it does not provide relief for those who have lost their livelihoods due to demolition. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has stated that, until now, it has primarily provided shelters for those affected by road projects, but after the state government’s order, it will review the situation and plan accordingly.
