Residents in Pune are expressing dismay over the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) plan to cut down over 300 trees in Aundh-Baner, Kothrud, and Koregaon Park for development projects like road widening. Aundh-Baner residents, in particular, are protesting the proposed removal of over 80 trees from Someshwarwadi Chowk to Ganaraj Chowk for parking space, which is part of the road widening as per the development plan. Concerns have been raised about the lack of necessity for further road widening, especially with the ongoing implementation of the Pune Metro's third corridor, which connects key destinations in the area.
Tree activists emphasise that the proposed tree felling, particularly 41 trees in the Aundh-Baner ward limits, violates the Tree Act. According to the act, PMC should submit a roadmap indicating affected, unaffected, and transplant-bound trees, as well as the location for new tree plantations. The Tree Act also mandates alternatives for cases involving numerous obstructive trees, which is absent in PMC's application. The objections raised by citizens during recent hearings have been forwarded to the road department, and tree cutting permission won't be granted until the conditions are met, potentially saving nearly 50% of trees on each stretch if the conditions are fulfilled.
