The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has come under scrutiny for the indiscriminate felling of over 500 trees in the past year, with a glaring absence of records detailing the number of trees replanted in compensation. Despite regulations mandating the replantation of an equal number of trees chopped for developmental projects, the PMC's garden department attributes the lack of records to other departments. The tree authority committee, responsible for granting permission to cut trees, has reportedly not maintained the required replantation data, raising concerns about the city's compliance with tree protection regulations.
Several development projects, including the construction of Sewage Treatment Plants and road widening, have contributed to the tree felling. While some departments claim to have replanted trees as per regulations, others shift responsibility, citing issues such as lack of space for replantation. The absence of a centralised monitoring system for tree replantation has exacerbated doubts about the accuracy of tree numbers and compliance with regulations, prompting concerns from environmentalists and casting a shadow on the municipality's commitment to tree conservation.
