Pune Fire Department Grapples with Rising Incidents of Gas Leaks from MNGL Pipelines

03 May 2024

Over the past four years, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) fire department has grappled with over 100 fire incidents stemming from leaks in Maharashtra Natural Gas Limited (MNGL) pipelines across various areas of the city. Such incidents, now recognized as a distinct category by the department, pose significant challenges, with over 900 cases of locked doors and 300 cases of locked elevators reported in residential and commercial buildings. MNGL officials attribute these incidents largely to development activities like road expansion and drainage line installation, which often lead to accidental damage of gas pipelines despite the presence of yellow identification stones placed by MNGL.

As Pune's urban landscape evolves, the PMC fire department has identified 17 incident categories requiring immediate attention, including fire outbreaks, gas leaks, and locked doors. Particularly concerning are the increasing instances of MNGL leaks, with the department registering 140 fire incidents due to such leaks between 2020 and March 2024, marking a significant uptick in incidents compared to previous years. Despite efforts to coordinate with various agencies to prevent such incidents, challenges persist due to ongoing urban development activities.
