PMC to Enhance Waste Management in Sus, Bavdhan, Mahalunge, and Shivane

21 Jul 2024

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to appoint an agency to improve waste collection, transport, and treatment in the areas of Sus, Bavdhan, Mahalunge, and Shivane. In the absence of a treatment plant in the western region, all waste currently goes to the eastern part of the city for processing. The new proposal includes a clause requiring the agency to set up a local plant for waste processing. The areas generate about 65 to 70 metric tonnes of garbage daily, and residents have complained of waste dumping and burning. The PMC’s solid waste management department plans to allocate a three-year contract worth approximately Rs 13 crore for this initiative.

Residents have been seeking better waste management solutions, with concerns about the lack of a local treatment plant and other amenities. An activist from Sus noted that despite being included in PMC limits two years ago, public services have not improved significantly. The rising residential population in Bavdhan and Sus, due to new housing projects, has increased the need for efficient waste management. The PMC aims to enhance garbage collection efforts through this new contract.
