Operational Delays at New Airport Terminal Building Due to Pending BCAS Approval

21 Apr 2024

The opening of the new terminal building at the city airport, inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi over a month ago, remains delayed due to pending approvals from the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS). The delay is attributed to the need for ensuring a comprehensive inline baggage screening system, approval for food outlets, and the deployment of additional Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) personnel. Despite assurances of operational readiness by April 15, the new terminal awaits BCAS clearance, which necessitates a thorough assessment of the baggage screening process to ensure security standards are met. Although BCAS teams have conducted multiple inspections, final approval is pending, with no definitive timeline provided for resolution.

Meanwhile, airport authorities have communicated the situation to BCAS officials in Mumbai, awaiting a response to address the outstanding issues. The delay has also affected the deployment of additional CISF personnel, with bureaucratic procedures and inter-ministerial discussions prolonging the process. As travellers express frustration over the ongoing delay, airport officials remain hopeful for swift approval following the submission of requisite documents. However, the absence of a concrete timeline for resolution underscores the challenges in navigating regulatory hurdles to ensure the safe and efficient operation of the new terminal facility.
