PMC Clears Record High of 16 High-Rise Projects in 2024, Sparking Infrastructure Concerns

09 Jan 2025

High-rise building approvals in Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) limits reached a record high in 2024, with 16 proposals cleared — a 78% increase compared to the nine approvals in 2023. The PMC high-rise committee approved projects in areas like Somwar Peth, Balewadi, Baner, Mundhwa, Kharadi, and Bopodi, with the tallest building reaching 160.45 meters. Officials attributed this rise to improved infrastructure, including wider roads and mandatory twin-pipeline systems for treated water supply. However, experts emphasized the importance of proper planning and scrutiny to avoid overburdening traffic, sewage, and water supply systems.

While some architects praised vertical growth as an efficient way to densify urban areas, urban planners cautioned that approvals must be backed by supportive infrastructure to prevent future challenges. Citizens in Nagar Road areas expressed concerns over existing traffic and water woes, warning that unplanned high-rise developments could exacerbate these issues. Critics accused PMC of prioritizing revenue over sustainable urban planning, urging better management of municipal services to avoid long-term complications.
