PMC Conducts Fresh Anti-Encroachment Drive on FC Road, Deccan

08 May 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) carried out a major anti-encroachment operation on Wednesday targeting repeat offenders on Fergusson College (FC) Road and in the Deccan area. Stalls occupying the side and front margins of commercial establishments were demolished, and illegal roadside vendors were removed. According to the head of PMC’s anti-encroachment department, prior warnings had been issued, but many vendors continued to operate illegally. The action was triggered by consistent complaints from local MLAs and residents who submitted a memorandum demanding strict action against the encroachers.

Residents and regular visitors to the area said that repeated encroachments have made pedestrian movement hazardous and triggered traffic issues. Footpaths are often blocked, forcing people to walk on the busy road, which increases the risk of accidents. Moreover, some roadside vendors have been accused of causing social disturbances, including arguments and unruly behavior. PMC had taken similar actions in the past, including after incidents such as the Kalyani nagar hit-and-run and an alleged drug party, but encroachers tend to return shortly afterward, highlighting the need for sustained enforcement.
