The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) evacuated over 2,800 people from low-lying areas to shelter homes due to heavy rainfall, which caused waterlogging and floods in many neighbourhoods. Areas like Mulanagar, Old Sangvi, Lal Topi Nagar, Bhatnagar, Laxmi Nagar, Bopkhel, and Sanjay Gandhinagar were among the most affected. Civic commissioner Shekhar Singh stated that most evacuations were precautionary as water levels in rivers were expected to rise further due to increased discharge from the Pavana, Andra, and Mulshi dams. Pimpri Chinchwad received 175mm of rainfall in 24 hours, leading to severe flooding and river water entering homes. Fire brigade teams, equipped with boats, were actively involved in rescue operations.
The situation remains under control, but the civic body is proceeding cautiously, especially with IMD issuing a red alert for Thursday and an orange alert for Friday. Singh emphasised the need for heightened vigilance in areas like Dapodi, Kasarwadi, Sangvi, and Indiranagar along the Mula and Pavana rivers, due to increased dam discharges. The Pavana river’s water level rose by over 13% in the last 24 hours, prompting alerts to the NDRF and discussions with army officials for potential assistance. Pimpri Chinchwad police closed nine roads due to flooding and enhanced patrolling to ensure citizen safety.
