The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has sought assistance from IIT Bombay and CoEP Technical University (CoEPTU) for a structural inspection of 4,883 flats built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). This step follows complaints from residents about construction defects, including ceiling issues, bathroom and toilet leakages, and general shoddy workmanship within a year of possession. While PMRDA assures that the structures are stable and safe, the inspection aims to determine whether substandard materials were used during construction. Developers have been directed to carry out repair works, with some bathrooms and toilets being reconstructed in affected buildings, and a deadline of December 15 has been set to complete the repairs.
The flats, constructed for economically weaker sections and low-income groups across 45 buildings, were handed over last year, but recurring issues have sparked protests from residents. Earlier this year, flat owners held demonstrations at the PMRDA office, demanding faster action. Residents have also raised concerns about the removal of security personnel and the closure of the sewage treatment plant during Diwali. PMRDA has warned developers of strict action if quality compromises are confirmed during inspections, emphasizing its commitment to ensuring residents’ safety and addressing grievances effectively.
