The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set a June 7 deadline to complete repair works at 116 chronic flash flood spots across the city ahead of the monsoon. These include areas like Sahakar Nagar, Hadapsar, Market Yard, Sinhagad Road, NIBM Road, BT Kawade Road, Katraj, Deccan, and Karvenagar, identified based on past incidents of waterlogging and flooding. With an estimated ₹150 crore to be spent on pre-monsoon works including nullah and sewage cleaning, road repairs, and culvert maintenance the PMC also aims to clean 382 culverts, 48,000 drainage chambers, and 184 km of stormwater drains. Officials have increased coordination among departments and agencies to streamline road-digging and repair efforts.
However, civic activists and residents have criticized the timeline as a mere formality, citing a lack of lasting solutions to recurring monsoon problems. They expressed concern over the quality of repairs, alleged collusion between officials and contractors, and recurring flooding in traffic-heavy areas like Karve statue and Vishrantwadi. Activists from citizens’ group Surajya Sangharsh Samiti also questioned the transparency of tendering processes, stating that low-cost approvals often compromise quality. Residents have urged the administration to focus on long-term planning rather than repetitive seasonal fixes.
