Pune has experienced its wettest August in four years, recording 203.8mm of rainfall in the first 24 days of the month, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD). This marks a significant increase from previous years, with August 2021, 2022, and 2023 recording much lower rainfall totals. The normal August rainfall for Pune is 145.2mm. Meteorological experts noted that areas like Lohegaon, Hadapsar, and Wadgaon Sheri could have seen even higher rainfall due to intense convective showers, though long-term data primarily relies on measurements from Shivajinagar. IMD scientists highlighted that there were 12 rainy days in Pune this month, compared to just seven in August 2023 and 2021, and twelve in August 2022, with localised heavy showers contributing significantly to the overall rainfall.
Independent weather forecasters attributed the increase in rainfall to a nearly 15-day monsoon break, which led to intense but localised convective rain or thundershowers in Pune. These storms stretched over almost a week, translating into above-normal rainfall. They explained that an upper air cyclonic circulation over the Arabian Sea increased moisture in the region, resulting in prolonged thunderstorms. Despite similar conditions, Mumbai has yet to meet its August rainfall quota, with only 265mm recorded at the Santacruz observatory, far below the 561mm average, due to a prolonged monsoon break.
