Slow Crawl Near University Chowk as Metro Rail Work Causes Traffic Congestion

25 Jul 2023

Ganeshkhind Road, the route to Pune University, has become a daily ordeal for commuters due to bumper-to-bumper traffic, incessant horns, and ongoing rains. The situation has become a recurrent nightmare, exacerbated by the lack of a proper traffic coordination committee. Adding to the chaos is the PMRDA's third Metro line work from Hinjewadi to Shivajinagar, hindering smooth vehicular movement. The absence of a dedicated traffic management authority has left citizens suffering, with some commuters reporting spending up to two hours on the stretch, opting to travel late in the evening to avoid jams. Despite numerous meetings between relevant authorities, the traffic situation remains unchanged, leading to exasperation among citizens' groups. The completion of the University flyover, a crucial part of the third Metro line project, has been slow, and traffic congestion is now not only affecting commuters but also hampering the overall Metro work, slated for completion by April 2025. Experts propose a comprehensive traffic management plan involving all local authorities to alleviate congestion, but its implementation is still pending.

In summary, the morning commute towards Pune University on Ganeshkhind Road has become a nightmarish experience, exacerbated by traffic jams, chaotic conditions, and ongoing construction of the third Metro line. The absence of a well organised traffic coordination committee and a dedicated traffic management authority has left citizens frustrated, spending significant time stuck on the road. Despite meetings and discussions, little has changed, and both commuters and the Metro project are suffering from the persistent congestion. Experts suggest a coordinated traffic management plan involving all local authorities, but until it is put into action, the situation remains grim and unpredictable.
