Pune’s ₹909-Crore Glass Skywalk Project in Lonavala to Be Completed by 2027

23 Feb 2025

The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has been directed by the Deputy Chief Minister to ensure the timely completion of the ₹909-crore Lion and Tiger Point development project in Lonavala. A key feature of this project is Maharashtra’s longest glass skywalk, which will be 125 meters long and 6 meters wide, connecting the popular viewpoints of Lion’s Point and Tiger’s Point. Inspired by the Grand Canyon Skywalk in the U.S., this structure aims to boost tourism by providing visitors with stunning aerial views. The project, which received approval in September 2023, involves acquiring 20.90 hectares of forest land in Kurwande village, for which PMRDA has already paid ₹5.2 crore. To compensate for the acquired forest area, alternative land parcels of 10 hectares in Suwadi and 11.3 hectares in Kondivade have been identified, along with the final stages of acquiring 3,378 square meters of private land.

The total project cost includes ₹213.1 crore for infrastructure development and ₹695.9 crore through a public-private partnership (PPP). The plan also includes a 90-meter-long bridge between the two viewpoints. PMRDA officials have stated that construction is expected to begin this year, with the state government likely to provide funding for infrastructure work. During a recent review meeting, authorities stressed the importance of completing the project on schedule, as all major approvals are already in place. The completion of this project by June 2027 is expected to transform Lonavala into a major tourist destination while creating employment opportunities for local residents.
