Safety Inspections Intensified at Metro Stations After Mandai Fire Incident

22 Oct 2024

Maha Metro is increasing safety inspections at all Metro stations undergoing construction following a fire incident in the basement of Mandai Metro station around midnight on Sunday. According to the executive director, no daytime work will be allowed in areas open to commuters, with strict night-time monitoring and round-the-clock barricading at work sites. The fire started during welding work, causing insulation material for air conditioning to catch fire, and was quickly controlled by the fire safety team and PMC's fire department.

The city fire brigade responded to the emergency call within five minutes and used fire extinguishers and breathing apparatus to manage the flames and dense smoke. The fire broke out due to welding sparks falling on insulation foam in the basement through a gap in the station's flooring. Metro officials confirmed that all stations are equipped with firefighting equipment and hold the necessary safety certifications. Commuters have urged the Metro administration to take stringent safety measures and prioritise construction work during nighttime hours to minimise disruptions.
