Traffic Grinds to a Halt as Yerawada Bridge Undergoes Emergency Repairs

10 May 2025

Massive traffic chaos gripped several parts of Pune including Yerawada, Koregaon Park, Kalyani Nagar, and adjacent areas on Friday due to emergency repair work on the Yerawada bridge. With only one lane kept open, commuters experienced hours-long delays, including a Kalyani Nagar resident who took nearly 50 minutes to cover a 10-minute stretch. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) began urgent repairs on the Tarkeshwar Bridge owing to a damaged expansion joint, laying concrete that requires three days to set. Traffic police advised commuters to avoid the route from May 9 - 11 and take alternative roads, but this advice came too late for many already caught in the jam.

The impact of the partial bridge closure led to widespread gridlocks on Don Bosco Road, Sangamwadi, and Nagar Road, triggering frustration among residents and commuters. Concerns were also raised about the quality and planning of the repair work, with citizens reporting recurring potholes and questioning the efficiency of the traffic management. Several commuters observed police inaction at major junctions like Aga Khan bridge, where vehicles flouted traffic signals unchecked. In some instances, local residents took it upon themselves to direct traffic, highlighting both the urgency of infrastructure upgrades and the gaps in on-ground civic coordination.
