Cabinet Minister Warns PMC Over Inaction on Shifting Sus Road Garbage Plant

05 Apr 2025

A Cabinet minister on Thursday expressed strong displeasure over the Pune Municipal Corporation's (PMC) inaction in shifting the garbage processing plant from Sus Road to Nande Chande, despite repeated citizen complaints and his own directives over a year ago. During a heated phone call with the municipal commissioner, the minister warned that if immediate steps were not taken, he would be compelled to personally stage a protest at the site. Earlier in the day, a meeting was held at the minister’s residence with PMC’s solid waste management officials, where he criticized the delay and reiterated that the decision to shift the plant had been made in January 2024.

The garbage processing plant, operated by Nobel Company on a BOT basis since 2016, processes hotel waste into slurry and is located near residential areas like Green Hills, DSK Vidyanagari, and Samruddhi Villa. Residents have long complained of foul smells and health hazards due to gases and open garbage trucks frequenting the plant. Despite public outcry and pressure from the local MLA, who represents the Kothrud constituency where the plant is situated, the PMC has yet to act. A civic official, requesting anonymity, claimed the delay was due to administrative hurdles in moving the plant to Nande Chande.
