PMC to Widen Riverside Road in Karvenagar to Ease Traffic Congestion

28 Feb 2025

Commuters using Riverside Road in Karvenagar may soon get relief from traffic congestion as the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) plans to widen a key section near Rajput slums. The land required for this expansion belongs to a housing society primarily occupied by retired government officials. According to PMC officials, the widened road will improve commuting, particularly for two-wheeler riders, and ease peak-hour traffic jams. The project is expected to be completed within a month. The Riverside Road, a crucial 17-km stretch from Shivane to Kharadi, has faced delays since 2018 due to land acquisition issues, affecting residents from Kothrud, Karvenagar, Sinhagad Road, and Deccan.

The road widening will take place near the entry point of Riverside Road, which connects Rajput slums while traveling from Deccan toward Erandwane. To control traffic, authorities have barricaded the entry point, restricting four-wheelers. Local residents have frequently complained about heavy congestion at this location. PMC had initiated widening efforts near the slums in 2022 but left a 200-meter stretch incomplete due to land disputes. Officials now confirm that the remaining work will be completed soon, ensuring smoother traffic flow in the area.
