Silent Protest by Punawale Residents Opposing Proposed Garbage Depot

19 Nov 2023

On Saturday (18 November), a silent protest unfolded at 18 Latitude Mall, where hundreds of Punawale residents and members of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Cooperative Societies Federation (PCCSF) expressed their disapproval of the proposed garbage dump in the area. Scheduled to commence in December, the project by the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has stirred unrest among residents, leading to demonstrations against the plan. The citizens, in small groups, positioned themselves at various locations with banners and hoardings, urging a reversal of the decision and advocating for alternative solutions to address waste management concerns.

The PCMC has initiated discussions to acquire 22 hectares of forest department land in Punawale for the solid waste management project, a site earmarked since 2008. Despite payment of ₹3.5 crore to the forest department and an agreement to provide an alternative 22 hectares in Chandrapur, the impending commencement of the unit's establishment has triggered protests. Earlier this month, a bike rally and the recent silent protest have been part of the community's efforts to voice their opposition. The PCCSF and Punawale residents escalated their protest by sending a legal notice to the PCMC commissioner on November 9, citing potential adverse impacts on air quality, groundwater pollution, and infringement of residents' fundamental rights. In response, the local Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) has pledged to examine the issue and support the residents' plea, despite the PCMC's determination to proceed with the project. The community has further taken legal action by filing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) against the proposed garbage unit.
