Repair work on 15 highway stretches passing through Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad remains stalled due to a jurisdictional conflict between the Public Works Department (PWD) and the local municipal corporations. While the PWD is officially responsible for maintaining these roads, they have not yet transferred ownership to the Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations (PMC and PCMC), causing delays in much-needed repairs. This has left commuters frustrated, especially in areas like Hadapsar and Laxmi Nagar, where poor road conditions have led to severe traffic jams and safety concerns.
Civic officials from PMC and PCMC have expressed difficulty in allocating funds for repairs since the roads are not yet under their control. Despite ongoing requests to the PWD, Cantonment, and National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to officially transfer the roads, no progress has been made. The PWD claims that the process of handing over these roads began in 2017, and most have been transferred. However, local residents and commuters are still experiencing significant issues due to the lack of maintenance, calling for immediate action to resolve the bureaucratic impasse.
