The Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) has identified over 2,500 structures in blue floodline areas across the twin cities during an ongoing survey, marking the first large-scale assessment of constructions in these zones. Over 50% of these structures have already received notices as the civic body plans to initiate a demolition drive against unauthorised buildings. The majority of the identified structures are along the Pavana River, followed by areas near the Mula and Indrayani rivers, with over 60% being residential. The survey, originally scheduled to be completed by August 30, is still ongoing, with over 80% of the work finished.
PCMC's deputy municipal commissioner stated that the civic body will prioritise the demolition of commercial structures, as residential demolitions are prohibited during the monsoon by a high court order. For temporary structures, demolitions can occur within 24 hours of notice, while fully completed buildings require a month’s notice. The remaining areas to be surveyed are densely populated, and the number of unauthorised structures is expected to rise. The civic body is cross-referencing field survey data with drone images from a recent property assessment and the floodline notification from 2009 for accuracy.
