PMC Cracks Down on Property Tax Defaulters with Water Disconnection Drive

02 Jan 2025

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has launched a drive from January 2 to disconnect water connections of property tax defaulters who fail to clear their dues. Five flying squads, consisting of officials, laborers, and plumbers, have been formed to survey defaulters and take action against both commercial and residential properties. While property attachment is avoided for residential properties on humanitarian grounds, the civic body is exploring stringent measures like cutting water connections. Legal advice is being taken to ensure these actions are within the provisions of the MRTP Act and other laws.

PMC collects around ₹2,000-2,200 crore annually through property tax and has set a target of ₹2,600 crore for this fiscal year. Recently, the civic body introduced innovative measures, such as playing music bands outside properties of defaulters, recovering ₹60 crore within a month. Out of 14.5 lakh properties under PMC’s tax ambit, owners of 8.5 lakh properties have cleared their dues. The drive aims to ensure strict compliance and timely recovery of pending taxes.
