PMC to Demolish Unauthorised Structure Near Pune Air Force Station Restricted Zone

13 Jul 2023

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) is set to demolish an unauthorised RCC structure that has been erected within the restricted zone near the weapon storage area of the Pune Air Force Station (AFS) at Lohegaon. The structure, measuring 20m by 10m, was constructed on a 200 sqm plot of land without obtaining any permissions or approvals. The AFS discovered the illegal construction during a routine check and promptly notified the PMC, requesting its demolition. The AFS letter specifically identified the location of the illegal construction as survey number 135/1 and 135/2 in Forest Park phase 1, which falls within the restricted zone of 900m from the outer parapet of the AFS Pune boundary wall. This location is near the weapon storage area, commonly referred to as the "bomb dump."

In a similar incident in September 2022, the PMC had demolished two buildings within the restricted zone following a notice from the AFS. Despite pasting a notice at the site on July 10, instructing the landowners to demolish the structure within 24 hours, no action was taken, prompting the PMC to proceed with the demolition. PMC officials have been cautioning the public against purchasing land plots within the restricted zone, as there are several land pockets in the vicinity of the bomb dump, including survey number 135/1 and 135/2 in Forest Park phase 1. It has been observed that private landowners have been involved in land plotting and selling plots without disclosing the restrictions to buyers, leading to complications when construction activities commence. The PMC emphasises the importance of adhering to the district collector's guidelines issued in 2008 and working in collaboration with the air force authorities to maintain the safety and security of the AFS Pune.
