The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has proposed a record-breaking draft budget of ₹13,995 crore for the 2026-27 financial year, a sharp 11% increase over the previous fiscal. Presented by Municipal Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram, the budget marks the first major financial roadmap since the newly elected body took office in January 2026. Urban mobility and water security stand as the twin pillars of this plan, with ₹1,866 crore allocated for roads and ₹2,077 crore for water supply. A significant portion of these funds is earmarked for the 34 recently merged villages, which have transitioned from a "dual-authority maze" to being fully under PMC’s planning jurisdiction following a February 2026 state notification.
The budget leans heavily on the revenue potential of these fringe areas, projecting over ₹3,400 crore from building permissions alone. To address the infrastructure deficit in these regions, the PMC plans to lay 100 km of new water pipelines and operationalize 80 overhead storage tanks, finally extending the 24x7 equitable water supply scheme to the outskirts. Beyond basic utilities, the administration has signaled a commitment to the environment by increasing its department's budget sixfold to ₹51 crore, primarily for riverfront development and pollution abatement. Despite a projected fiscal deficit from the current year, the PMC aims to leverage GST shares and property tax from 3.5 lakh previously unassessed properties to fuel this ambitious growth.
