Uneven Chambers Poor Roads Put Pune Commuters at Risk

14 Jul 2025

Pune’s roads have become a safety hazard, with uneven and sunken drainage chambers, open manholes, and poor-quality roadwork causing serious accidents and daily inconvenience. One such tragic example is that of a 41-year-old Wakad resident who met with a life-changing accident in 2019 due to a half-open chamber lid leaving him with nine fractured bones and 40% disability. Despite such incidents, the condition of city roads hasn’t improved much. Potholes, waterlogged stretches, and broken chambers continue to plague commuters, especially two-wheeler riders navigating through poor lighting and heavy rain. Residents say poorly coordinated repair work and lack of adherence to Indian Road Congress (IRC) guidelines are to blame.

The civic officials acknowledge the issue, citing technical setbacks like phased land acquisition and poor placement of stormwater drains as root causes. The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) claims to have repaired 854 chambers since April this year and is now focusing on better planning in new projects. However, activists argue that the real issue lies in systemic negligence, lack of accountability, and poor training among junior engineers and contractors. With different departments passing the responsibility back and forth, residents continue to bear the brunt of inadequate infrastructure and unsafe roads.
