PMC Gears Up for Monsoon Tree-Cutting Teams Deployed to Tackle Safety Hazards

27 May 2025

With the early arrival of the monsoon, concerns over falling trees and branches have resurfaced in Pune, prompting the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to release a list of authorised tree-cutting contractors and designated officers for each ward. The aim is to ensure quick action in case of emergencies. The head of PMC’s garden department emphasized that monsoons typically bring a spike in tree-related incidents often leading to blocked roads or, tragically, fatalities. To prevent such risks, the civic body has asked its garden staff and contractors to proactively inspect trees and remove dead or weak branches before they become dangerous.

However, some residents and housing societies are already uneasy. Many claim that routine tree trimming hasn't happened this year, raising fears of accidents and power outages. In areas like Sahakarnagar and Padmavati, residents are particularly worried about large branches hanging precariously close to power lines. With rain already here and winds picking up, locals are urging the PMC to act swiftly not just with lists, but with timely on-ground action.
